Can we fix teen accident rates?

On Behalf of | Jun 1, 2022 | Serious Personal Injury |

Teenagers have very high fatal car accident rates. It’s often noted that these are disproportionate to the size of the group. There are not that many teen drivers, but they cause more than their fair share of deadly wrecks.

Considering there are more teen drivers on the road every year, it makes sense that we would want to solve this issue. But is it even possible to do so? Is there anything that can be done to address this issue, as we have done with things like drunk driving or distracted driving?

Why the accidents actually happen

To understand the difficulties being faced in a situation like this, you must realize that inexperience is a very serious factor in many of these accidents. A lot of crashes happen because young drivers who haven’t been behind the wheel for long simply make mistakes. Being inexperienced at any task makes errors more likely, and driving is no exception.

Drivers’ training courses work to overcome some of these mistakes by teaching teens how to drive safely. But drivers’ training cannot make up for the experience that they lack. Teen drivers already do have to put in hours with their parents or with instructors. But there’s nothing that can be done to make up for the fact that they haven’t been driving for nearly as long as someone who is 30 or 40 years old.

As a result, it’s very likely that there’s not much that can be done to reduce these accident rates, and there will always be risks. If you’ve been injured or if you’ve lost a loved one in a car accident, be sure you know how to seek financial compensation.
