What are the top complaints about hurricane claims?

Every year, hundreds of Lousiana residents are forced to file an insurance claim after a hurricane destroys their property. If you’re one of these people, you need to get compensation as soon as possible so you can find another place to live. Unfortunately, complaints against insurance companies tend to skyrocket during hurricane season.

What are the top issues with hurricane claims?

According to the Lousiana Department of Insurance (LDI), complaints about homeowners insurance make up 80% of the calls they’ve received about hurricane claims. Most of the complaints were about the length of time it took the insurance companies to issue a payout. As of Jan. 11, 2021, the LDI has registered nearly 700 complaints about insurance companies in the wake of the past hurricane season.

The LDI’s data revealed that State Farm had the most complaints by far, with 163 calls. FedNat Holding Company Group came in second place with 93 calls. The complaints covered a wide range of properties, including businesses, residential homes and vehicles. Some customers also had complaints about their individual insurance agents.

Ideally, insurance companies are supposed to compensate you for property damage in return for making a monthly payment. Unfortunately, most insurance companies are reluctant to pay the full amount that you’re owed. Some companies try to contest the claim by challenging the extent of the damage or claiming that you haven’t given them enough evidence. You might need to hire an insurance claims attorney if you’re having trouble getting the compensation that you deserve.

How could an attorney help you during this time?

Some insurance companies will back off once they know that you have an attorney on your side. An attorney could figure out why your insurance company is denying your claim and help you provide evidence that proves that you deserve compensation. They might also help you file a complaint with the proper channels to get the issue resolved as quickly as possible. If you haven’t filed your claim yet, an attorney could tell you what you need to do to maximize your chances of getting a fair payout the first time.
